Pan American Symphony Orchestra presents an evening of nuevo tango, with exceptional music talent from Argentina, in its December 5, 2009 performance, Apiazzollado. This unique performance highlights the cello in tango music, with solos by a young Argentine talent who is gaining world-wide recognition, Juan Emme. Latin Grammy Award winner, pianist Octavio Brunetti, and violinist Diana Sundsvold join the Pan American Symphony with solos that display passionate virtuosity. Graciela y Buenos Aires, written by contemporary tango composer, Jose Bragato, features the cello as the leading voice in what was traditionally the role of the violin or the bandoneón in a typical tango orchestra.  Renowned Nuevo tango composer Astor Piazzolla also wrote works that highlighted the cello and, in this performance, the Pan American Symphony Orchestra performs three of them.  Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas (The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires), is a set of four tango compositions written as separate compositions to convey the seasons of the city, but then later were often played together as a suite.  The Pan American Symphony Orchestra presents the work, a concerto grosso, with solos for cello, piano and violin.  Included in this concert is Piazzolla’s most recognized and loved song, Adios Nonino, written in memory of his father, and played with rhapsodic intensity by Brunetti.   Escualo, a complex piece written for Piazzolla’s violinist, Suarez Paz, is performed with driving energy by soloist Sundsvold.   Adding variety to the evening’s performance is La Cambiada, a modern work by contemporary Argentine composer, Gerardo DiGuisto, which reflects the composer’s inclinations towards jazz and folk.  A candonga, the piece is a mix of Milonga and Candombe, popular dance music styles.   December 5, 2009 at 8:00 PM General Admission - $25 Gunston Middle School 2700 South Lang Street, Arlington, VA 22206 For more information and for advance ticket sales, call 240-242-8032.
